Held outdoors at YMCA Day Camp Streefland
Our Village School offers weekly outdoor programming for children ages 5+ on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Each week children will travel from class to class in their mixed-age cohort of 15 or less. They will dig deeper into four Areas of Exploration each day: two in the morning, an hour for lunch/free play, and then two more in the afternoon. Each cohort will have a consistent anchor teacher that also spends the day with them, Below you will find descriptions of each Area of Exploration. Please see the descriptions for the specific day it is being offered. If you want your child to experience all areas, be sure to sign them up for both Tuesday AND Thursday. All this beauty happens at YMCA Day Camp Streefland in Lakeville--a 64+ acre wooded wonderland.
"Every child is an artist." -Pablo Picasso
Let's bring out the inner artist! Our watercolor and mixed-media artist will lead the group through targeted lessons that highlight a famous artist and focus on a specific artistic element and/or technique. Students will explore the use of line, shape, form, value, color and how to create their own masterpieces!
"No one is born a great cook, one learns by doing." -Julia Childs
Not only are we cultivating future foodies but we are honing an important life skill. As we prepare a tasty dish, we train as a chef would--learning to measure, season, select ingredients, balance flavors, consider presentation, etc. We will also utilize any harvest we yield from our garden.
"Give children a chance to love the earth before we ask them to save it." -David Sobel
As we hike along with our naturalist, we slow down to soak in the beauty all around us. Tapping into all of our senses as we uncover natural wonders and learn more about our outdoor surroundings. A time for kids to fall in love with the earth!
"Why try to explain miracles to your children when you can have them plant a garden." -Janet Kilburn Phillips
Growing your own food is a rewarding experience, no matter your age. And part of being a successful gardener includes getting your hands dirty! We will work together to plan our community garden, start seeds, learn about organic and sustainable gardening methods and hopefully reap a bountiful harvest!
"You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have." -Maya Angelou
Children have an innate sense of curiosity and creativity that often go hand-in-hand. This portion of our day is spent tapping into that magic! They might spend time learning to finger-knit, complete a mosaic, or even build a catapult. It's a time to bring out the maker in us all!
"Movement is the song of the body" -Vanda Scaravelli
This is time devoted to getting our wiggles out, stretching our bodies and re-centering and/or organizing as a group to practice a sport or activity. Yoga is also incorporated so that students have a chance to re-center and practice mindfulness.
"As long as we live, there is never enough singing." -Martin Luther
Music brings so much joy into the world. During our music hour, children are encouraged to unleash that joy and share their music into the world. Each week the students will also spend time preparing for an end of season production for our community!
"Imagination is your mind's playground." -Vince Gowmon
What child doesn't love steeping into the shoes of another character? This is also a sneaky way to practice literacy & public speaking as we read our lines and give life to words on a page, Each week, students will work towards their end of season production for our community!
