“A true love of learning happens as you hike along wooded trails with friends, plant a garden together and share in the wonder of exploration. Play and discovery are center stage and it's a delight to watch the learning unfold just as it should.”

Our Village School offers weekly outdoor programming for children ages 5+ on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Cohorts are mixed age groups. We have K-5th grade cohorts (for 5-10 year olds) or a middle school cohort (for 11-13 year olds). Every week children will travel from class to class in their mixed-age cohort. Each cohort will have a consistent anchor teacher that also spends the day with them. They will dig deeper into 4 Areas of Exploration each day: 2 in the morning, an hour for lunch/free play, and then 2 more in the afternoon.

Below you will find descriptions of each Area of Exploration. Please see the descriptions for the specific day it is being offered. If you want your child to experience all eight Areas of Exploration, be sure to sign them up for both Tuesday AND Thursday. All this beauty happens at YMCA Day Camp Streefland in Lakeville - a 64+ acre wooded wonderland.

Art (K-5, MS)

"Every child is an artist." -Pablo Picasso

Guide: Rita Ryan (K-5) & TBD (MS)

Day Offered: Tues (K-5) Thurs (MS)

Let's bring out the inner artist! Our k-5 cohorts will progress through targeted lessons that highlight a famous artist and focus on a specific artistic element and/or technique. Students will explore the use of line, shape, form, value, color and how to create their own masterpieces! Our middle school cohort will explore photography during the fall 2021 semester.

Cooking (K-5)

"No one is born a great cook, one learns by doing." -Julia Childs

Guide: Neal Meier

Day Offered: Tues (K-5 only)

Not only are we cultivating future foodies but we are honing an important life skill. As we prepare a tasty dish, we train as a chef would--learning to measure, season, select ingredients, balance flavors, consider presentation, etc. We will also utilize any harvest we yield from our garden.

Makerspace (K-5)

"We are born makers. We move what we're learning from our heads to our hearts through our hands." -Brene Brown

Guide: JoBeth Thompson

Day Offered: Thurs (K-5 only)

Children have an innate sense of curiosity and creativity that often go hand-in-hand. This portion of our day is spent tapping into that magic! We might spend time learning to finger-knit, completing a mosaic, or even building a catapult. It's a time to bring out the maker in us all!

Gardening (K-5)

"Why try to explain miracles to your children when you can have them plant a garden." -Janet Kilburn Phillips

Guide: John Zweber

Day Offered: Thurs (K-5 only)
Growing your own food is a rewarding experience, no matter your age. And part of being a successful gardener includes getting your hands dirty! We will work together to plan our community garden, start seeds, learn about organic and sustainable gardening methods and hopefully reap a bountiful harvest!

Science (K-5)

"Give children a chance to love the earth before we ask them to save it." -David Sobel

Guides: Lindsay Raab | Leah Darst

Day Offered: Thurs (K-5 only)

As we hike along with our naturalist, we slow down to soak in the beauty all around us. Tapping into all of our senses as we uncover natural wonders and learn more about our outdoor surroundings. A time for kids to become field scientists and fall in love with the earth!

Drama (K-5)

"Imagination is your mind's playground." -Vince Gowmon

Guide: Aaron Strawn

Day Offered: Tues/Thurs (K-5 only)

Here's a chance for kids to exercise their dramatic talents and jumpstart their imaginations. Drama Lab uses improvisation, short scenes, monologues, character development and more. Your child will burst with laughter as they improve social skills, listen, problem solve and focus - all while making friends along the way!

Music (K-5, MS)

"As long as we live, there is never enough singing." -Martin Luther

Guide: Claire Shaw

Day Offered: Tues (K-5 & MS)

Music brings so much joy into the world. During our K-5 music hour, children are encouraged to unleash that joy and share their music into the world through the use of songs and instruments.

Movement (K-5, MS)

"Movement is the song of the body" -Vanda Scaravelli

Guide: Anna Gaffaney (K-5), TBD (MS)

Day Offered: Tues (K-5) Thurs (MS)

Lunch/Free Play

“And at the end of the day, your feet should be dirty, your hair messy and your eyes sparkling.” -Shanti

Slowing down for a shared meal is nourishing in so many ways. Our participants refuel as they enjoy their home lunches together on a blanket of grass--chatting, laughing, and strengthening friendships. They also have ample time to run around outside playing freely and explore different play invitations such as zip lines, stick forts, tree swings, gaga ball, etc.

Wilderness (MS)

"The more you know, the less you have to carry." -Mors Kochanski

Guide: TBD

Day Offered: Thurs (middle school only)

This is our time to build our knowledge of the Great Outdoors. We will explore areas such as outdoor survival skills, orienteering, etc.

Shop (MS)
